Moonshine...



Did you see the moon last night...or early this morning? The light
was so intense that it totally lighted up my upstairs hall as it
smiled down from the western sky at 6a.m. when I arose. The
world of nature is truly amazing, something about which I need
reminding periodically, living in the city as I do. But driving to
church this morning along route 311, I was suddenly in a shower
of leaves...glorious yellow leaves swirling around my car and
seemingly coming from only two trees along the highway. Nothing
ahead, nothing behind...only that one beautiful, amazing leaf
shower which lasted about 30 seconds and put a big smile on my
face which lasted all the way to the church. Nature's gift for my
morning...a swirling invitation to the dance of life.

Life is truly a mixed bag. Today's weather couldn't be more perfect if I had put in a special order: brilliant sunshine, moderate temperatures, a lovely breeze, all topped off by Carolina blue skies. Absolutely heavenly! Sublime! It was a day of running errands, and I have been enjoying every minute of it, even reminding myself to be gentle with the occasional tooth-gritting driver...(gentle to myself, that is, and it's my teeth that are gritting) by just letting it all go and accepting what I cannot change. It's called Serenity. Right now, I am readying the little toaster oven to heat up one of the dishes I cooked last week, preparing for a lovely meal on the screened porch where the wind chimes will serenade me while I eat. A Response...of Sorts

  Nearly a month since I last wrote here...a month marked with so many internal debates...with much soul-searching regarding the ways in which my state...this place which I have called home for the last nearly-30 years continues to respond to what was good news on October 11 for so many. I speak, of course, of the judgment handed down in the U.S District Court by Justice Max Coburn that Amendment One, passed last spring, banning same- sex marriages, was unconstitutional.  The soul-searching has come, not because I disagree. Quite the contrary. I was among those overjoyed by this step... quite a giant step...toward justice and equality for all people in North Carolina. In Kenya...

Yes, we're here, after 24 hours of travel time and nearly 40 hours without real sleep. Last night the bed at the Wildebeest was so welcoming and I slept until 9a.m. for the first time in years. No apparent jet lag...and a slow,pleasant day today, doing a few errands, catching up on email, reading, and talking with people here. For those of you in Carolina who continually complain about our roads being under continual construction (and I am one of you), after riding down a main road near here and watching our driver doing potholes and serving into the non-existent shoulder the road countless times, I pledged never to complain about our roads again. The people here would think they were in heaven driving I-85...while we Carolinians mutter under our breaths and curse the NCDOT.
